Derrière le Miroir
French art magazine Derrière le Miroir was published by gallerist and writer Aimé Maeght beginning in 1946, after the end of WWII. Original loose leaf lithographs were produced for every edition of the magazine, creating a legacy of collectable modern and contemporary lithography that were affordable to the general public. A gesture of accessibility after the end of WWII, the early years of the magazine celebrated modernists who had been exiled or displaced. The magazine was in production until 1982. Throughout the magazine’s history, the lithographs were unnumbered and unsigned because artists gave printing rights to Maeght rather than owning rights themselves. This was another gesture of accessibility and ease of distribution. Since the end of the publication, the lithographs have become highly collectable and are known for their high quality printing.
