Braniff Airlines x Calder Collaboration

In 1972 Calder was invited to paint three of Braniff airlines aircrafts, making them the world’s largest flying artworks. One plane was in celebration of Braniff’s 25 years of traveling to South America, reflected in the vibrant color pallet. The second plane was to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the American Nation, and was a red, white, and blue composition. The third plane could not be finished before Calder’s passing. Calder created the Flying Colors Collection, a series of six lithographs inspired by the unique airplane project. The print editions can be found in museums such as the MCA Chicago, Detroit Institute of Arts, the Whitney Museum and more.
